Greenland
The Land of the People
A land of extremes, 85% of Greenland is covered with ice, some of it up to 3km thick representing 10% of the planet’s natural fresh-water reserves. But far from being a frozen wasteland, the island actually contains a staggeringly rich vein of natural and cultural diversity offering visitors some of the most remarkable wildlife experiences on Earth and a fascinating insight into a history and culture that has survived and thrived in these harsh realms for millennia. This is nature at her most inspired, where towering ice sculptures share the seas with majestic humpbacks and narwhales, where mighty glaciers roll down to the very edge of the icy depths and where
the skies are filled with the sights and sounds of thousands of seabirds.
Stopping at the coastal communities along the way, we follow in the footsteps of earlier pioneers visiting abandoned whaling stations, ancient Inuit burial grounds and remote settlements.
Join Hurtigruten’s MS Fram on a voyage to Greenland, accompanied by distinguished lecturers with an in-depth knowledge of the country.

Be spellbound by the contrasts on display in the kingdom of icebergs and Inuits.
Greenland
A pristine wilderness of rugged mountains and awe-inspiring fjords, lush green valleys and incredible wildlife, where some of the most active glaciers on Earth and icebergs the size of cathedrals plays out a tableau of breathtaking beauty across a timeless landscape. Blessed with a rich vein of natural and cultural diversity, this spectacular frozen world offers a fascinating insight into a history and culture that has thrived in these harsh realms for millennia.
Greenland’s inland ice cap is more than 14 times the size of England and along the coast the mighty iceberg formations are constantly changing.
In Greenland our relationship with local partners guarantees you one of the most well-informed and insightful experiences possible. Our ‘safety-first’ landings take you close to Greenland’s fascinating culture and history – to the settlements, sights and places of genuine historical interest. Magnificent natural surroundings form a spectacular backdrop to your voyage.
Through generations the Inuits have formed their own distinctive way of life. Arts & crafts, traditional drum dance, kayak performances and colourful national costumes are all cultural expressions that are very much alive today.
Journey Onboard
Journeying aboard the superbly equipped MS FRAM, we explore the dramatic Arctic coastline, from the sparsely populated extremes of the northwest, through to the lush rich valleys of its southern seas. We will visit traditional coastal communities like Sisimiut and Qaanaaq and sail through the spectacular waters of Disko Bay, where gigantic sculptures of ice and snow reflect the dazzling rays of the Midnight Sun. We will discover abandoned whaling stations and ancient Inuit burial grounds, take in the captivating majesty of the Ilulissat Icefjord and search out the leviathans of the deep.
With on board lectures and an opportunity to explore the island’s remarkable landscapes on foot, by boat and even helicopter, these exhilarating voyages offer the chance for true adventure and exploration.
Climate & Temperatures
Although Greenland has an Arctic climate (which means the average temperature never exceeds 10°C in one month), the summers are relatively mild particularly in areas sheltered from wind. Inside the fjords the temperatures can reach up to 20°C.
Midnight Sun
The majority of Greenland lies above the Arctic Circle and therefore benefits from the Midnight Sun during the summer. This means 24 hours of sunlight to experience this unique landscape from the end of May to the end of July.

LIFE ON BOARD
No dressing up for dinner – no fuss, no frenzy – our aim is to sail calmly through the crisp clean air, close to the ever-changing environment.
CRUISE CARD
A cruise card will be issued on arrival on board as part of the check in procedure in accordance with ISPS regulations. All our guests are requested to wear this card when disembarking in all ports of call and landings. The card serves as a control system on the gangway enabling the ship to know which of our guests are on board and ashore at any time. This card, in addition to being the key card for your cabin, is also to be activated as your payment card on board. The card is the only means of payment for the on board facilities. To activate the cruise card account you must have a Visa or Mastercard. Please note that when using your credit card on board the ship, your account will be debited in NOK. The rate of exchange will be the one validated by your credit card company. Indicative rates are given on board, but these are not fixed. The evening before the voyage ends the account will be added up to be settled on board and a receipt brought to your cabin. We regret that there is no facility for cash withdrawals or currency exchange on board.
CUISINE
The open seating for the breakfast and lunch buffet creates a relaxed atmosphere in which to contemplate the sights already seen and anticipate those still to come. Where possible, we plan our menus around seasonal ingredients, taking advantage of local produce to satisfy healthy appetites stimulated by the fresh sea air. The restaurant is licensed and the daily three-course set dinner at your reserved table becomes an occasion to exchange the stories of the day before enjoying a coffee in one of the lounges or perhaps something stronger in the bar.
ON BOARD PRICES
Your voyage includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. Regular coffee/tea is complimentary throughout the whole voyage. Other beverages and refreshments during the day are not included but can be purchased on board in the cafeteria and bar.
ENTERTAINMENT
The emphasis on board is on relaxation and discovery, and not on the commercial entertainment which is so often a part of conventional cruises. Our aim is to get you closer to unique environments and to allow you to share the experience with your fellow travellers. Occasionally there may be some musical entertainment on board in the evenings.
EXPEDITION TEAM
Our Expedition Team is carefully selected for their knowledge, specific expertise and most importantly, their love of the destinations we sail to. Our expedition leaders are Karin Strand and Anja Erdmann, and here are some of our excellent expedition team members: Cathrine Moen (Trip Co-ordinator), Friederike Bronny (Geographer and Biologist), Rudolf Thomann (PhD in natural sciences, Hamburg University), Steffen Biersack (Geologist) and Manuel Marin (Ornithologist).
POLARCIRKEL BOAT LANDINGS
These sturdy boats enable both water-based exploration and safe landings in otherwise inaccessible areas. You will need to be fairly agile to board these but there is otherwise no need to worry about travelling in them. The crew will show you what to do and as long as you follow their instructions, after a few days it will become second nature.
SHORE EXCURSIONS
A selection of shore excursions is available to pre-book. Where available we will supply you with excursion information in advance, otherwise you will receive full details and prices on board. Excursions and their contents are subject to maximum/minimum numbers and local and weather conditions.
RESIDENT PHOTOGRAPHER
Our resident photographer will invite you to photography workshops and practical sessions out on deck to enable you take the best possible pictures and video from your voyage. You may also choose to buy the voyage DVD that is tailor-made at the end of each voyage.
